Mick Asbury; The Family Man and Consummate Teacher
Mick was a man who cherished his time with family and friends. He filled his days in the telecommunications industry having worked for Ma Bell / SBC / AT&T as the industry grew and the company’s morphed. But what really drove Mick was his personal life and his love for family, friends and the outdoors. Mick spent his personal life as the consummate teacher whether he was teaching his kids to play baseball, Labradors to fetch a bumper, horses to pin a cow and as much as he would have love to, get a large mouth bass to jump on his hook. Within Mick’s full life, one of his favorite things was to bring people together and share the good times. Personal commentary; One of my favorite recent memories was opening day of dove season 2006. Dad was unable to shoot however; he still did all the scouting for us that year and was right in the mix of the fun. As the day wound down, I was the only one left without a limit and quickly became the “butt” of everyone’s jokes. All-in-all the ribbing was great and we all laughed at my shooting incompetence. Anyways, I digress, back to Pops, Mick always set up events the day after Thanksgiving and for the last several years it has been shooting trap out at the settling ponds. This annual event is being established in memory of Mick, bringing together family and friends to honor his life and raise money to fight ALS (the disease that robbed Mick of his golden years).
